How to Navigate Daylight Saving Time with Your Child’s Sleep Schedule

Ah, daylight savings time—the biannual event that can throw a wrench in your child’s sleep routine. But fear not, with the right approach, you can minimize disruptions and sail through the time change with ease. Here’s how:

  1. Avoid Getting Overly Anxious: It’s easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding daylight savings time, but try to avoid letting it overwhelm you. Many parents become anxious about the time change and start using new props or implementing different bedtime routines in an attempt to manage the transition. However, this can actually cause more disruption in your child’s sleep. Stick to your usual routines as much as possible, and trust that your child will adjust to the new time with minimal fuss.

  2. Embrace a Calm Attitude: The key to tackling daylight savings time is to stay calm. Remember, it’s just a one-hour shift, and with a positive mindset, you can help your child adjust more smoothly.

  3. Adjust to the New Time Quickly: Start transitioning to the new time as soon as possible. By adjusting to the new time promptly, you can help your child adapt more smoothly to the time change.

  4. Focus on Wake Windows: Rather than stressing over specific bedtimes or nap times, focus on your child’s wake windows. Keeping them awake for appropriate periods between sleeps can prevent overtiredness and facilitate smoother transitions. Grab a copy of my ebook to learn the optimal wake windows for every age 0-4 years old.

  5. Avoid Changing Bedtime: Some experts suggest adjusting bedtime a week before the time change. However, I believe this can add unnecessary stress for parents. Instead, trust in your child’s ability to self-regulate their sleep and adjust naturally to the new time.

  6. Trust in Your Child’s Ability to Adapt: If your child knows how to independently sleep, they will likely adjust to the time change without much fuss. Trust in their ability to self-regulate and handle the transition with ease. If you need help teaching your child to sleep independently, sign up for my ‘Pick My Brain’ plan. We’ll discuss personalized strategies that will easily help get your child on the path to independent sleep!

  7. By approaching daylight savings time with a calm attitude and focusing on your child’s natural sleep patterns, you can help them adjust to the time change smoothly. Remember, a little flexibility and a positive outlook can go a long way in ensuring a peaceful transition for your family.
